mayawithaneye@gmail.comI'm Maya. Yes, it's an unusual name, but I like to think I'm an unusual girl. I've been very heavily into musical theatre since I was 12, and I'm quite the art/book/filmwhore as well. I like my musicals clever and complex, my books well-written, and my film either independent, independent in spirit, classic, or foreign. Of course, I do try to keep an open mind as well!
My ethnicity is rather unusual as well. My dad is Mexican-American and my mom of Russian-Jewish ancestry--I derive my intense love of learning and my sense of humor from the latter, and much of my culinary taste from the former. I don't speak Spanish--a fact of which I'm somewhat ashamed. I do know a fair amount of French though! I'm a rabid Francophile.
I'm not a religious person, but I'm somewhat spiritual. I also worship Stephen Sondheim. The man is proof of some kind of divinity out there. Two years ago, I wrote to him and he sent me a letter in return; it's the first thing I would save in a fire.
I'm a theatre major (and creative writing minor) at James Madison University in my senior year. Rather, I'm at the beginning of my second senior year...I'm not quite going to be done on time, but hey, it's okay. More time to avoid the real world! I have a Friends-locked writing journal--
bellelettre, but that's mostly for the lyrics and musical theatre parodies that I've been known to churn out. I currently write for BroadwayWorld.com, and would like to be some kind of theatre critic or theatre journalist once I'm out of school.
What else can I say? I'm an interesting bundle of contradictions--most of my friends consider me to be a sweet person, but I'm usually pretty cynical and sardonic. Maybe a cynical, sardonic person who giggles a lot. I can usually make people believe that I'm fairly intelligent and cultured, but the fact that I am an extreme ditz usually makes itself clear within a few minutes.
I'm the mod of one active community--it celebrates the writing of the late great fantasist, Angela Carter.

"There is no sin except stupidity."--Oscar Wilde
"The most difficult performance in the world is acting naturally, isn't it? Everything else is artful."--Angela Carter
"To love is to suffer. To avoid suffering, one must not love. But, then one suffers from not loving. Therefore, to love is to suffer, not to love is to suffer, to suffer is to suffer. To be happy is to love, to be happy then, is to suffer, but suffering makes one unhappy, therefore, to be unhappy one must love, or love to suffer, or suffer from too much happiness, I hope you're getting this down."--Sonja (Diane Keaton) from Woody Allen's "Love and Death"
"I quickly laugh at everything for fear of having to cry.”--Pierre de Beaumarchais
"Time doth flit; oh, shit."--Dorothy Parker
"'Artists,' he said, 'are people who say, 'I can't fix my country or my state or my city, or even my marriage. But by golly, I can make this square of canvas, or this eight-and-a-half-by-eleven piece of paper, or this lump of clay, or these twelve bars of music, exactly what they ought to be!'"--Kurt Vonnegut
